Territories Stolen Generations Redress Scheme

NT Government

The Prime Minster and the Minister for Indigenous Australians have released the Commonwealth's Closing the Gap Implementation Plan.

The Commonwealth Government have established the 'Territories Stolen Generations Redress Scheme' as part of their implementation plan.

With this announcement the Australian Government is investing $378.6 million over five years for a financial and wellbeing package for Stolen Generation survivors forcibly removed from their families in the Northern Territory, Australian Capital Territory and the Jervis Bay Territory.

The Scheme puts words into action to help the Stolen Generations to heal from the trauma of being forcibly removed from their families.

The Northern Territory was under the control of the Commonwealth Government when over 200 Aboriginal children were forcibly removed from their families, therefore compensation and reparation remains a Commonwealth responsibility.

The Territory Labor Government has stood in support of the NT Stolen Generations Aboriginal Corporation in their ongoing appeals to the Commonwealth for a Stolen Generations Reparation/Redress Scheme.

We share their excitement with this announcement this morning.

The NT Stolen Generations Aboriginal Corporation plays a pivotal role in representing and addressing the needs of NT Stolen Generation members and their families.

Quotes from Minister for Aboriginal Affairs Selena Uibo

"The Territory Labor Government welcomes this development which will help the Territory's Stolen Generations heal from the trauma of the past.

"We lobbied the Commonwealth Government on behalf of survivors in the Territory and we are proud to see this outcome come to fruition."
