Territory's Major Events season in full flight

The Territory's events season is full steam ahead in the lead-up to another iconic happening on the calendar, Darwin Festival. This iconic Top End event follows strong showings at a number of others, including the Territory's biggest music festival, BASSINTHEGRASS, in May, and the AFL games in Darwin and Alice Springs in May, June and July.

Construction of Festival Park began this week, less than three weeks out from the Darwin Festival Santos Opening Night Concert on Thursday, 4 August, at Darwin Amphitheatre.

Festival Park will host eating and drinking outlets, the INPEX Sunset Stage and the Power and Water Bamboo Bandstand - it is the hub of Darwin Festival.

The festival will continue the momentum gathered by BASSINTHEGRASS, which saw almost 16,000 people head to Mindil Beach for 12 hours of music, and the Territory's AFL games.

Independent research into this year's BASSINTHEGRASS shows the event generated a total expenditure stimulus of $15.8 million in the Territory economy this year, including $11.1 million of new money. The festival attracted more than 5,500 interstate visitors, and delivered 33,442 direct visitor nights.

Not only were attendances and economic impacts a positive but so too was sentiment, with attendees rating the event an average 8.6 out of 10. More than 67 percent of attendees indicated they were likely to return next year.

Meanwhile, the third and final Territory AFL game for 2022 took place over the weekend in Alice Springs, attracting more than 6,300 people. In total, the three AFL games saw almost 20,000 fans enjoy the games in Darwin and Alice Springs.
