Third and final phase for Flood Risk Mitigation Studies

Flood Risk Management Studies

Rockhampton Regional Council has commenced the final phase of the Flood Risk Management Studies for Frenchmans and Thozets Creeks, Moores Creek, and South Rockhampton.

The studies which will inform a Floodplain Management Plan for each area, have been made possible thanks to $350,000 in funding from the Queensland Government's North Queensland Natural Disaster Mitigation Program, administered by the Queensland Reconstruction Authority.

Local Disaster Management Group Chair and Mayor Tony Williams said the final phase will provide Council with conceptual mitigation options for the identified areas to consider when addressing current and future flooding concerns.

"Flood mitigation is a priority that we as a Council are addressing, and with the contribution of community voices, we are working towards determining the most appropriate mitigation measures," Mayor Williams said.

Infrastructure Councillor Ellen Smith is thrilled to reach the final phase and share the latest developments in the ongoing Flood Risk Management Studies.

"We are currently assessing conceptual flood risk mitigation options within the high-ranking priority areas of Frenchmans and Thozets Creeks, Moores Creek, and South Rockhampton," Cr Smith said.

"The final steps involve getting insights on the broad options we've been considering from you, our community. This is a collaborative effort, and your input matters.

"We're holding two information sessions to provide residents with an overview of the outcomes and provide the opportunity to ask the project team questions.

"I encourage the community to attend these sessions and share their insights. Together, we can create a holistic overview of the risks and mitigation measures best suited for the identified high priority catchments."

Members of the community are invited to attend the following sessions:

  • North Rockhampton (Moores, Frenchmans and Thozets Creek) Session on 29 November 2023 at Rigarlsford Park, Elphinstone Street, 2:00 PM to 4:30 PM
  • South Rockhampton Session on 30 November 2023, Victoria Park, 2:00 PM to 4:30 PM
