This Art Exhibition Will Have You Reading Walls

If you think art is only about brushstrokes and landscapes, think again! This winter at Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery, the words are taking centre stage.

Do You Read Me is on now until 24 August, celebrating the power of text as a visual art form. From witty and playful to deeply personal and political, these works don't just hang on a wall – they speak. And if you listen closely, they've got plenty to say.

Inspired by American artist Bruce Nauman's iconic neon work The true artist helps the world by revealing mystic truths, the exhibition draws on the MPRG Collection to showcase artists including Juan Davila, Guerrilla Girls, Lisa Waup, Katherine Hattam and more. Each piece uses language not just to decorate, but to provoke, question and tell stories.
It's not all looking and reading, there's plenty of doing too. Kids can dive into bookmaking with Kids Own Publishing, try monotype printing with local printmaker Jennifer Buntine, or get playful with words and images in a text-based print workshop.

Grown-ups can curl up in the reading nook supported by Mornington Peninsula Libraries or explore the Mayor's Short Story Awards space, where past winning entries are proudly on display.

Whether you're a word nerd, an art lover, or just chasing a creative day out, this exhibition proves that language can be as colourful, bold and unexpected as any painting, and it's happening right here on the Peninsula.
