More than 3,000 spectators flocked to the Warragul Country Club for the Gippsland Super 6 Championship last week, the largest professional golf tournament in Gippsland.

This is the second year that Baw Baw Shire has attracted the popular tournament, with Council collaborating with the Latrobe Valley Authority to provide a sponsorship of $25,000.

Running from Tuesday 6 December through Sunday 11 December, the tournament saw more than 140 participants, including Australian and international touring professionals, travel to the region, taking part in a program of events that catered for keen golfers from juniors and beginners right through to seasoned professionals:

  • Tuesday 6 December: Junior Pro-Am
  • Wednesday 7 December: Tournament Pro-Am
  • Saturday 10 December: 2022 Gippsland Super 6 Knockout
  • Sunday 11 December: Family Day & Gippsland Super 6 Knockout

Victoria's own Tom Power-Horan claimed his second Gippsland Super 6 title on Sunday afternoon despite the wet and blustery conditions. The win sees Power-Horan move up the rankings in the 2022/2023 PGA Tour of Australasia Order of Merit to number 7.

Returning to Baw Baw following a successful tournament last year, the Gippsland Super 6 has become a showcase for Australia-based talent. Following last year's tournament, several competitors, including Brad Kennedy, Matt Griffin, Jed Morgan, Ben Campbell and Dimi Papadatos went onto play in the 150th Open Championship at St. Andrews in Scotland with another Gippsland Super 6 contestant, Anthony Quayle, finishing 15th.

In addition to the professional Gippsland Super 6 tournament, the PGA also conducts community engagement events throughout the year, including junior clinics and the Gippsland Super 6 Amateur event.

Council welcomes events like the Gippsland Super 6 Championship for the wide-ranging benefits they bring to our community and to our economy. They not only create pathways for junior players across Baw Baw to experience elite competition, but also increase visitation numbers and grow awareness of the region as a great sporting destination.

We look forward to hosting more events like this in the future."
