Three Charged in Hope Island Death

Police have charged a 53-year-old Gold Coast man with nine additional offences, as part of ongoing investigations into his unlawful end of life business.

Operation Xray Ezine was launched in July after police received correspondence from the Coroner's Office regarding the cause of death of a 43-year-old man at Hope Island on 11 April this year.

Toxicology results from a post-mortem examination confirmed the man died from acute pentobarbitone toxicity, a veterinary euthanasia drug listed as a schedule two substance under the Drugs Misuse Regulation 1987.

In September, following complex and protracted investigations by Gold Coast Criminal Investigation Branch and the Homicide Investigation Unit, detectives charged a 53-year-old Main Beach man with two counts of aiding suicide and one count each of trafficking dangerous drugs, possessing dangerous drugs and receiving or possessing property obtained from trafficking or supplying.

Two others – an 81-year-old Southport woman and 80-year-old Ashmore man – were also charged as part of the investigation at the time.

Following further investigations, detectives have now charged the 53-year-old man with nine additional offences:

One additional count of aiding suicide in relation to the death of a 75-year-old man at Ashmore on 9 January, 2024.

Four additional counts of supplying dangerous drugs, which include allegedly offering the drug at meetings in Maroochydore on 10 September and Nerang on 19 February.

Three counts of fraud, which include allegedly falsely claiming to be qualified solicitor and charging unauthorised fees for estate planning and end-of-life services.

One count of converting monies under the Collections Act 1966 in relation to the alleged misappropriation of donated charity funds for personal expenses.

He is scheduled to reappear at the Southport Magistrates Court on 2 December.

Investigations continue.
