Three schools in the Rockhampton Region will benefit from road safety upgrades as part of the School Transport Infrastructure Program (STIP), a joint initiative between the Department of Transport and Main Roads and Rockhampton Regional Council.

Crescent Lagoon State School, Gracemere State School, and Waraburra State School have been selected for upgrades aimed at improving road safety around school zones.

Waraburra State School will be the first to see improvements, with Council engaging Bell Equip Civil Contractors to carry out roadworks on Middle Road, Gracemere, adjacent to the school.

Infrastructure Councillor Marika Taylor said the works will include relocating the existing bus stop, constructing marked parking spaces, and modifying stormwater drainage.

"We're making a small tweak to the location of the existing bus stop to make it DDA compliant by shifting it about 10 metres closer to Johnson Road," Cr Taylor said.

"Along with that, we're installing around 20 marked parking spaces.

"While people already park informally in this spot, these new spaces will definitely improve things by being properly sealed and line marked.

"We're also adding a kerb around the parking area which will help keep cars clear of the concrete footpath, making the space more pedestrian-friendly too.

"These upgrades are all about making it safer, easier, and more organised for everyone — students, parents, and the wider community."

Divisional Councillor Edward Oram said works are expected to take approximately six weeks to complete.

"During this time, access to the bus stop and informal parking area will be temporarily removed," Cr Oram said.

"The existing concrete footpath along Middle Road will remain accessible, and traffic in both directions will continue throughout the works.

"We understand these works may cause some short-term inconvenience for parents and caregivers during school pick-up and drop-off times however the long-term benefits will far outweigh a few weeks of changed conditions.

"We ask motorists to follow all signage and observe the reduced speed limit of 40km/h while works are underway."
