Twelve months in, the TIG-ER Taskforce has dealt with nearly 1000 matters, finalising 3 in 4 cases - 62% of them resulting in early guilty pleas.
A recent expansion of the program has seen a 12-day turnaround between receiving a referral and reaching an outcome meaning offenders are held accountable faster.
The Finocchiaro CLP Government will stay the course as we reduce crime, improve court efficiency, and provide certainty to victims.
An innovative criminal justice program aimed at clearing Labor's court backlog is delivering real outcomes for Territorians as it reaches a major milestone.
In its first twelve months, the government's Targeted Intervention Group - Early Resolution Taskforce ("TIG-ER Taskforce") has dealt with a remarkable 956 matters, with 760 cases already finalised. More than 62% of these have resulted in early guilty pleas.
An expansion of the program across the summary offences team has seen 158 matters finalised in just 12 days between receiving referrals and reaching an outcome.
Attorney-General and the driving force behind the program, Marie-Clare Boothby said that these numbers were proof that the government's reforms are instilling confidence in a more efficient justice system.
"Nearly 1000 cases in just twelve months is a significant achievement, and we are seeing the initiative go from strength to strength. But these aren't just numbers - they're real-life examples of how our changes are holding offenders accountable and delivering for Territorians waiting for justice."
"I've shared this story before, but before TIG-ER, we had cases sitting in the system for months. One case was almost a year old. TIG-ER resolved it in a single day."
"When you see cases moving through the courts faster, and offenders facing the music sooner, you grow confidence in the justice system, provide certainty for victims, and increase security for vulnerable Territorians."
These latest results come as the government moves forward with its highly anticipated criminal procedure reforms, and on the back of a record number of judges being appointed to hear backlogged cases.
Since August 2025, the Finocchiaro CLP Government has seen remand times decrease and the number of matters proceeding to sentence increase (cases finalised), despite the country's strongest bail laws and robust law and order measures.
"Under Labor, victims were left in limbo while offenders benefited from a justice system in crisis because of chronic under-resourcing, lack of attention and broken promises. We've put an end to that."
"But there's much more work to do, and we'll continue to stay the course as we reduce crime, rebuild the economy, and restore our unique Territory lifestyle."
The TIG-ER Taskforce was established to fast-track criminal cases, by intervening in matters earlier on in the justice process to determine whether they can be resolved without prolonged court proceedings. In light of the success of the initiative, the TIG-ER Taskforce has been expanded to include the wider local court prosecution team - meaning more cases are being referred and finalised, reducing uncertainty for victims and easing pressure on the court.
