Mitchell Shire Council's fire safety inspection program is about to start and Council is calling on the community to start to prepare for the upcoming fire season.
Council has completed its roadside spraying program and is about to begin property inspections in high risk areas. The Municipal Fire Prevention Officer will start to issue Fire Prevention Notices on property owners to start to clear their land.
Council will also soon start its roadside slashing on priority local roads. Regional Roads Victoria is working through its slashing program on main roads and highways.
The wet start to spring has meant some fire preparations are slightly delayed this year.
While the current conditions may also make it difficult for residents to complete all their summer preparations, people are encouraged to use this time to check smoke alarms and review emergency plans.
Having a bushfire plan means you know what to do if you're at risk of fire.
Things to consider when preparing your bushfire plan include:
- When will you leave?
- Where will you go?
- What route will you take?
- What will you take with you?
- What will you do with pets or livestock?
- How will you stay informed about warnings and updates?
As part of your bushfire plan, put together an emergency kit that contains:
- Overnight bag with clothes and toiletries
- Medicines and first aid
- Important information and documents
- Mobile phone and chargers
- Drinking water
- Contact information for doctor, council and power company
- Addition masks
- Hand sanitiser
- Antibacterial wipes
