Indo-Pacific Endeavour commenced in Timor-Leste on September 16 to mark the 26th anniversary of the 1999 INTERFET peacekeeping mission.

Addressing the crowd in Dili, Chief of the Timor-Leste Defense Forces (F-FDTL), Lieutenant General Domingos Raul, more commonly known as Falur Rate Laek, said the historic moment connected the past and the future, memory, inspiration, legacy and renewal.

"INTERFET was not just a military operation; it was an act of faith in the self-determination of people; a commitment to humanity and a demonstration that international cooperation, when guided by just principles, can change the course of history," Lieutenant General Falur Rate Laek said.

Joining him was Australian contingent commander Brigadier Malcolm Wells, who led Australia's first training team with the F-FDTL in 2001 when the nation's first military base was being constructed.

"I am very proud to be back again today to see what has been created since then. This beautiful opening ceremony is very important to me," Brigadier Wells said.

A week-long program of activities between the ADF and F-FDTL, including the annual gender, peace and security (GPS) engagement, grass planting and a faith-based engagement, will culminate in the annual Xanana-Cosgrove Shield on September 20 - the INTERFET anniversary.

"This important exchange continues to enhance the development of the vital role women play in security and defence forces," Brigadier Wells said.

'I am impressed by how much the F-FDTL has grown since I was first here in 1999 into the sophisticated force it is today.'

GPS team lead Lieutenant Commander Lisa Steel said she was excited to return for the third time.

"Women were pivotal in the nation's push for independence and will continue to play an integral role in Timorese society and culture," Lieutenant Commander Steel said.

"We always enjoy working with our F-FDTL partners as they achieve greater representation and leadership positions in their nation's defence force."

Following the opening ceremony, Brigadier Wells and Lieutenant General Falur Rate Laek shared stories of their joint passion for football, and of their nations.

"I am impressed by how much the F-FDTL has grown since I was first here in 1999 into the sophisticated force it is today," Brigadier Wells said.

Indo-Pacific Endeavour is Australia's flagship regional engagement activity supporting the Australian Government's focus on deepening diplomatic and defence partnerships across South-East Asia and the north-east Indian Ocean.
