Media Release Top End Named One of the World's Must-Visit Destinations for 2026
8 January 2026
Once again, the Territory is top of the charts when it comes to tourist choice. Just this week, the Top End has been named among the world's top destinations for travellers, claiming a coveted spot on the New York Times prestigious 52 Places to Travel in 2026 list.
The Top End is placed 14th out of a total of 52 destinations across the world - 35 places above Australia's only other mention: Melbourne.
Minister for Tourism and Hospitality, Marie-Clare Boothby celebrated the feature as a sign that the Territory was confidently making its mark on the world stage, and said that it signalled growing confidence in the Territory economy.
"To be featured in the New York Times - and so prominently - is something Territorians should be incredibly excited about."
"Time after time, we see the NT gaining ground when it comes to Australia's visitor economy - leading the charge with a slate of authentic and unique experiences. It shows that our hard work to rebuild the economy is already delivering growth, certainty, and security for the Territory's incredible tourism industry."
"Tourism is one of the 5 key pillars to growing our economy - and as I always say, when tourism thrives, the Territory thrives."
In a glowing tribute, the New York Times highlighted what locals have always known makes the Northern Territory special: from the reopening of Gunlom Falls in Kakadu National Park to Darwin Harbour - which is seven times the size of Sydney Harbour - to the Territory's ancient heritage, rich history and laid-back lifestyle.
"The United States is the number one country of origin for international visitors to the Territory, with some 34,000 American visitors spending around $80 million in the last financial year alone. Later this year, the Top End will play host - for the first time - to 'G'Day Australia 2026' - Australia's premier tourism industry event."
"This comes on the back of a transformative year for tourism, a record-breaking cruise ship season, and an array of sports and major events such as the sold out T20 international cricket."
"We love our parks and wildlife, events and culture, and our unique lifestyle - and clearly the rest of the world does too!"
Minister Boothby also paid tribute to industry operators.
"This is also a huge credit those behind the scenes across the tourism and hospitality industry, and our parks and wildlife teams, who commit day in and day out to showcase the very best of the Territory to visitors and the world stage."
"What a way to start the year for the Top End, and what a boost confidence as we gear up for another stellar year for Territory tourism."
