Tourism Council WA has welcomed today's announcement that Premier Roger Cook will take on the tourism portfolio, signalling the industry as a key economic focus for the WA Government.
"Tourism is an incredibly valuable industry to the future of Western Australia's economy, contributing more than $15 billion each year and creating more than 120,000 jobs across the State," Tourism Council WA CEO Evan Hall said.
"Having the Premier as Tourism Minister gives the industry a high profile, strong focus, and priority across Government portfolios. We hope this will translate into a strengthening of this vital industry and its role in supporting regional communities and jobs."
Mr Hall said it was a critical time for the tourism industry in WA, with global events, Cyclone Narelle and economic conditions impacting some regions and sectors.
"There has been a downturn in demand for small regional tour operators, regional self-drive destinations in some regions, and cyclone-impacted areas in recent months, according to our industry surveys," Mr Hall said.
"We recognise the work of the State Government through programs such as the Cyclone Narelle Tourism Business Support Package and Kimberley Season Pass.
"We look forward to working with the Premier to support the industry as needed, and grow it into the future."
Mr Hall thanked Hon Reece Whitby MLA for his contribution to the tourism industry during his time as Minister, particularly his recent swift action to roll out support for tourism businesses impacted by Cyclone Narelle.
