Works on a major project to seal the Towamba and Burragate Roads are progressing well, with the mountainous section from Ben Boyd Road to Nullica coming next.

Residents and road users in the area are being informed of a requirement to close Towamba Road from Nullica Shortcut Road to Ben Boyd Road while works are taking place in the area.

The road will close weekdays only from Tuesday 6 April to Friday 16 April, between 7am-5pm, during the NSW School Holidays, reopening two days before students return.

During these times the road will be closed in both directions to all traffic with the exception of emergency services vehicles requiring access to the area.

The road will open overnight and every Saturday and Sunday during the closure period.

Project Services Manager, Daniel Djikic said the closure is required to ensure road user and contractor safety.

"In its early stages, the sealing project has worked its way through flatter, rural sections in the Burragate area," Mr Djikic said.

"Careful planning has so far only required us to close single lanes, but as we progress into mountainous terrain we have no alternative other than to close this section to all traffic while works take place.

"Residents are being informed with distribution of flyers to road users and additional road signage advising of the upcoming closures is now in place along Towamba Road.

"We have consulted with local bus lines, and emergency services are being informed that access to the area will still be possible during the closure."

Mr Djikic said some residents had enquired about sections of the road that had seemingly been missed during sealing.

"During works it came to light that in some road sections there may be artefacts of cultural significance to the local Aboriginal community.

"We immediately contacted Heritage NSW and the Eden Local Aboriginal Land Council and are currently working through the consultation, assessment and permit process for work to be undertaken in these areas."

Funded with a $10 million grant from Transport for NSW, Member for Bega, Andrew Constance said the project will deliver safer road access to the Towamba and Burragate communities.

"Once complete, this vastly improved road will highlight our commitment to safe local, rural and regional roads."

Additional road closures for other sections of the road are also anticipated and these will be advised to residents and road users in advance.
