Work on the new roundabout at the intersection of Bayshore Drive and the access road to TAFE and Byron Bay Fair (IGA) has entered its next phase this week, with completion of the next stage, expected by the end of November, weather permitting.
The project includes construction of the roundabout, new footpaths, garden beds, kerbs and gutters, and lighting. It forms part of the broader development of Lot 12 Bayshore Drive, a 5.8-hectare Council-owned site where Byron TAFE is located.
Christopher Soulsby, Council's Manager Assets and Major Projects, said Council was doing everything possible to complete this next stage of roundabout construction before the start of the busy summer holidays.
"We've brought forward this next stage of works so we can finish the roundabout before Christmas and the peak holiday period," Mr Soulsby said.
"This means reducing a section of Bayshore Drive to one lane and changing access to Byron Bay Fair, but it's a necessary step to keep the project on track.
Mr Soulsby reassured the community that Byron Bay Fair and all Sunrise businesses remain open and encouraged locals to continue supporting them.
"We know these changes may cause some inconvenience, and we appreciate everyone's patience. Byron Bay Fair will be accessible via northbound traffic only, and we're asking drivers to follow detour signage and plan ahead."
Once the roundabout is complete, traffic flow and access to the shopping centre will return to normal. The final stage of works, expected to follow, will include finishing touches such as footpaths, landscaping, and lighting installation.
"We'll continue to keep residents and businesses informed as the project progresses. Our goal is to deliver a safer, more efficient intersection that benefits the entire community."
Key traffic changes until 28 November (weather permitting):
- A section of Bayshore Drive between Sunrise Boulevard and Centennial Circuit has been reduced to one lane.
- The temporary roundabout at Bayshore Drive and Sunrise Boulevard will be removed.
- Northbound traffic from Centennial Circuit towards Elements Resort will continue as normal.
- Southbound traffic from Elements Resort towards Centennial Circuit will need to detour via Sunrise Boulevard.
- Access to Byron Bay Fair will be available via Bayshore Drive northbound only.
