A small section of Lanyon Drive will have an off-peak closure this weekend, while Coppins Crossing Road will be closed for one day in early February, to allow for work on two major road infrastructure projects.
There will also be a traffic change from next week with the Eastern side of the new Dog Trap Creek Bridge being completed as part of the Monaro Highway upgrade.
From 7pm Friday 16 January, to 5pm Sunday 18 January 2026, weather permitting:
Lanyon Drive will be closed between the northbound and southbound carriageways of Monaro Highway to allow for a concrete pour on a new flyover structure over Lanyon Drive.
During the closure, there will be detours (see attached map) through the Hume industrial area along Sheppard Street.
An alternative route for road users travelling from Jerrabomberra to north Canberra is to turn right on to Lanyon Drive at Tompsitt Drive and then use Canberra Avenue.
Between Tuesday 20 January and Wednesday 21 January, weather permitting:
Northbound traffic along the Monaro Highway will be switched to the eastern side of the new Dog Trap Creek Bridge, located north of the intersection with Lanyon Drive in Hume.
Two lanes of traffic currently in place will be maintained to allow road users to travel on the new structure for the first time.
The Monaro Highway is being upgraded to deliver improved safety, freight efficiency and faster and smoother travel for Tuggeranong, the Woden Valley, and southern NSW.
Thursday 5 February 2026, weather permitting:
Coppins Crossing Road, between Holborow Avenue and Hazel Hawke Avenue, will be closed to allow for a concrete pour on the bridge surface. This work was originally scheduled for 22 January but has been postponed due to plant and concrete pump availability.
The following detours are in place (see attached map) during all closures of Coppins Crossing Road:
- Southbound from Belconnen: From William Hovell Drive, take the off ramp to Parkes Way and merge onto Tuggeranong Parkway.
- Northbound from Molonglo Valley: From John Gorton Drive, turn onto Cotter Road then follow the ramp onto Tuggeranong Parkway and take left exit at Glenloch interchange to merge onto William Hovell Drive.
Visit the Travel Impacts page for the latest updates.
The construction of the new Molonglo River Bridge and completion of John Gorton Drive will transform the Molonglo region and better connect the suburbs of Molonglo, including Denman Prospect and Whitlam to the rest of Canberra.
For details of changes to public transport during the closure, please refer to the Transport Canberra website at https://www.transport.act.gov.au.
Canberrans are also reminded of:
- Significant construction works taking place over January to connect the light rail network to the extension at Commonwealth Park as part of the Light Rail Stage 2A project.
Visit the Travel Impacts page for more details.
- Major traffic changes from January as part of the Commonwealth Avenue Bridge Renewal Project being delivered by the National Capital Authority (NCA) on behalf of the Australian Government.
Information on the project including the impacts to motorists and roads, the public transport network and foot/bike paths can be found on the NCA website.
