Works are underway to transform the site of the former Glen Devon Primary into a park the whole community can enjoy.
Construction kicked off this week and is expected to be completed in April.
The two-hectare parcel of land is owned by the Victorian Government, which is retaining the land for future education provision.
In the interim, the use of the site as a park is supported by the Government, which is also funding the works through a $870,000 Growing Suburbs Fund grant.
Wyndham City Mayor Cr Josh Gilligan said the park would have a new landscaped lawn, a circuit path, seats and picnic table, a shelter and nature-play area.
"Restoring Glen Devon is another example of how this Council is working hard to deliver a liveable city - not just a big city," Cr Gilligan said.
"By turning the site into a park, the area will once again be a key community gathering space, which is an asset to the neighbourhood."
"Werribee residents who have fond memories of attending school on this site will be able to visit the new park with their own families."
"Wyndham City is constructing and maintaining the park and has leased the site for the next five years, with the potential to extend this lease for a further five years."
"After this time, the Minister for Education, who owns the land, will determine the future educational use of the site."
Glen Devon Primary School closed in 2010.
