Kalaru will be the site of major road network upgrades focused on safety, resilience and accessibility over the coming months, as the first stage in a broader and more comprehensive plan of future road and drainage improvements for the village.
Road carriageway renewal between Armstrong Drive and Evans Park will be the centrepiece of the work that will also include sections of kerb and gutter installation, stormwater and drainage upgrades, and the extension of the existing shared path network from Old Wallagoot Road through to the western edge of Kalaru at Armstrong Drive.
Bega Valley Shire Council's Project Services Manager, Daniel Djikic said the work reflects the ever-increasing traffic flows and substantial development within and around Kalaru.
"We've developed a comprehensive plan and design for the Tathra Road corridor within the village to ensure all future transport network projects and service upgrades complement each other," Mr Djikic said.
"We are currently able to proceed with the first stage of works and we are very much looking forward to seeing these important improvements come to life.
"By taking a longer-term approach, we're in a better position to seek further funding from the state and federal governments for subsequent stages of work."
The nature and extent of the works means there will be impacts for motorists while construction takes place.
"While we'll do what we can to minimise the inconvenience for travellers, the nature of the works does mean we'll need to close one lane of traffic at times throughout the project," Mr Djikic said.
Council crews will be onsite later this month, with the first stage of works set to be completed in March 2022, weather permitting.
This work is being funded by the NSW Government through the Roads to Recovery and Active Transport programs.
