TRC 2023 Engineering Scholar up for challenge

Toowoomba Regional Council's (TRC) 2023 Engineering Scholarship appointee is powering through the challenge of juggling work and study.

Lucas White was appointed as TRC's 2023 'Generator' Engineering Scholarship recipient which allows him to work casually with Council while undertaking his study with the added bonus of a contribution towards the costs of his degree.

Lucas said when he got the scholarship he was very excited and thought it would be a great opportunity to begin his career.

"Since I started here at Council I've been working alongside some of the engineers at Construction and Maintenance Central and we've been working on some civil projects like roundabouts, traffic lights and footpaths.

"I've learned a lot about all the steps it takes to get a project up and running and a lot of project management like organising trades.

"I think it's a great mix of being in the office but also being out on the ground and actually seeing projects taking shape.

"It's great being able to work here at TRC while I'm studying at uni because everything has a real connection - putting into practice what I'm studying," Lucas said.

TRC Infrastructure Services group Committee chair Councillor Carol Taylor said Lucas was a great example of the success of Council's Generator program.

"For some time now, TRC has offered scholarships, internships, cadetships and graduate level positions offering on-the-job learning across a range of disciplines.

"The annual Engineering Scholarship has been offered to a student undertaking their studies at university with Council making a contribution towards the cost of their study while offering casual employment with us to gain industry experience.

"I'd encourage all students in relevant fields to keep an eye on Council's web site for opportunities such as the one offered to Lucas this year as it really is a great program and one Council is proud to offer," Cr Taylor said.
