Under the Water Scarcity Initiative (WSI) programme, ESCWA, in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture, Water Resources and Fisheries in Tunisia and the Arab Center for the Studies of Arid Zones and Dry Lands (ACSAD), organized the first national consultation on strengthening the resilience of the Medjerda Basin on 2 June. The consultation was preceded by a field mission to the basin.
The consultation brought together representatives of government institutions, research organizations, civil society, and local stakeholders to discuss the impacts of climate change on the water and agriculture sectors, review the climate vulnerability assessment methodology, and identify priority vulnerabilities through a participatory process. It also marked an important step towards developing a climate resilience package aimed at strengthening water security and supporting climate adaptation efforts.
The field mission included visits to the Sidi Salem dam and the National Institute of Field Crops, where participants examined water management and agricultural production challenges under changing climate conditions, contributing to the ongoing assessment of vulnerability and resilience in the Medjerda Basin.
