UK Embassy Backs Maya Forest Documentary Launch

UK Gov

The UK Embassy in Guatemala supported the launch of a new ABC News documentary, an audiovisual piece highlighting ongoing efforts to preserve the Maya Forest, one of the most strategic and biodiverse regions in Central America.

The event brought together more than 100 attendees, including ambassadors, private sector representatives, cooperatives, environmental organisations, community actors and media outlets. The documentary, presented by FUNDAECO with support from the Embassy, focuses on the Mirador-Río Azul National Park and the Naachtún-Dos Lagunas Protected Biotope, key areas that form the core of the Maya Forest and a vital biological corridor for the region.

The production highlights the work of the Elite Genesis Group, a specialised team of rangers operating in remote and high-risk areas. It documents their response to ongoing threats such as illegal camps, intentional forest fires, and illicit activities that endanger the area's biodiversity and archaeological heritage.

During the event, FUNDAECO noted that continued operations face a critical moment due to reduced funding, which could weaken on the ground presence and allow new threats to emerge. UK Ambassador Juliana Correa recognised the unwavering commitment of the Elite Genesis Group and emphasised the need for stronger collective action to protect a natural and cultural heritage of global significance.

The documentary is now available on YouTube under the title

, through the official ABC News channel.
