Ukraine, Russian Aggression Damage Register Top Riga Justice Meet Agenda

The Council of Europe Ministers of Justice will meet in Riga (Latvia) on 11 September at an informal conference entitled "On the Path to Justice for Ukraine: Advancing Accountability, Supporting the Resilience of its Justice System and Reuniting Children with their Families," which is being held under the Latvian Presidency of the Organisation's Committee of Ministers.

The ministers attending will consider how the Council of Europe and its member States can enhance their support for the Ukrainian justice system and help to provide an international response to the aggression by the Russian Federation and its consequences.

Session 1 will focus on means of ensuring comprehensive accountability in the context of the Russian aggression, with the launch of the "Register of Damage Caused by the Aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine." The ministers will also discuss an international compensation mechanism for the damage and the establishment of an international tribunal for the crime of aggression.

Session 2 will look at the progress in the investigation of war crimes committed by Russia in Ukraine and the implementation of the Council of Europe Action Plan for Ukraine for 2023-2026. The meeting will provide an opportunity for ministers to offer additional support to Ukraine.
