On 30 September, ESCWA, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Coordination Office (DCO) and UNFPA, convened a virtual briefing for United Nations Resident Coordinator Offices (RCOs) across the Arab region on demographic change, population ageing, and their implications for UN country programming.
The briefing brought together UN practitioners to discuss emerging demographic trends, review progress under the Fifth Regional Review and Appraisal of the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing (MIPAA), and exchange experiences on integrating ageing and older persons' issues into Common Country Analyses (CCAs), Cooperation Frameworks, and broader UN programming processes.
Through presentations and an interactive roundtable, participants highlighted good practices, lessons learned, and priorities for strengthening support to countries as they respond to demographic shifts. The discussion underscored the importance of ensuring that the rights, needs, and contributions of older persons be reflected in development planning and programming, in line with the commitment to advance inclusive and sustainable development across the Arab region.
