Council of Europe Secretary General Alain Berset will participate in the 7th meeting of the European Political Community (EPC), organised by Denmark in the framework of its Presidency of the Council of the European Union. The event will bring together European leaders to discuss support for Ukraine, security and resilience, and Europe's response to today's geopolitical challenges.
During his visit to Copenhagen (1-3 October), the Secretary General will address the major geopolitical shifts affecting Europe and the wider international order, stressing the importance of the Council of Europe's New Democratic Pact - a commitment to safeguard democracy, human rights and the rule of law as essential pillars of stability and peace. He will underline that ensuring democratic security is central, as resilient democracies are the foundation of a Europe able of withstanding both traditional threats and hybrid pressures. In this context, he will also highlight the Council of Europe's key role in supporting Ukraine, including the Register of Damage, work on future accountability mechanisms, and the Action Plan Resilience, Recovery and Reconstruction (2023-2026), which backs crucial reforms for European Union accession and Ukraine's democratic security.
On 1 October, the Secretary General will attend the dinner hosted by Their Majesties The King and Queen of Denmark. The following day, he will take part in a roundtable on "Security and resilience", organised by Denmark, in addition to the plenary session and bilateral meetings with other European leaders.
On 3 October, following the EPC meeting, Secretary General Alain Berset will pay an official visit to Denmark for discussions with national authorities on cooperation with the Council of Europe and shared priorities. He will meet with Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen for an exchange on current political developments in Europe, Denmark's contribution to the Council of Europe's work, and prospects for strengthened bilateral cooperation. Discussions will also cover migration issues.
