UN Debt and Rights Expert Heads to Kuwait Visit

GENEVA - The Independent Expert on the effects of foreign debt and other related international financial obligations of States on the full enjoyment of all human rights, particularly economic, social and cultural rights, Attiya Waris, will visit Kuwait at the invitation of the Government from 1 to 8 October 2025.

The expert will examine issues related to Islamic finance in poverty alleviation, illicit financial flows, fiscal affairs, development assistance, debt management, and their implications for human rights.

Waris will meet with Government ministries and local authorities, state institutions, representatives from civil society, private sector actors, academics, and other stakeholders. Meetings will be held in the capital, Kuwait City, and other locations.

The Independent Expert will present her preliminary findings and recommendations at a press conference on 8 October at 04:00pm local time at the United Nations House, Mishref, Block 7A, Diplomatic Square, State of Kuwait. Access will be strictly limited to journalists.

The Independent Expert will present a report on the visit to the UN Human Rights Council in March 2026.
