UN Housing Rights Expert to Visit Guatemala

GENEVA - The UN Special Rapporteur on the right to adequate housing, Balakrishnan Rajagopal, will conduct an official visit to Guatemala from 14 to 25 July 2025.

Rajagopal will visit Guatemala City, Alta Verapaz, Izabal and Zacapa departments, among others. He will hold meetings with national and local officials, judiciary, indigenous authorities, communities, civil society representatives and other stakeholders.

The expert will assess the legal, institutional and policy framework for the protection of the right to adequate housing, including for the prevention of homelessness and forced evictions. He will examine housing adequacy, including availability, affordability, habitability, and accessibility. He will also look at how different groups and communities enjoy the right to adequate housing, and review access to justice and remedies for victims of housing rights violations.

The Special Rapporteur will hold a press conference at 11:00 on 25 July 2025 in Guatemala City. Access will be strictly limited to accredited media. Details will be communicated locally.

The expert will present his report to the UN Human Rights Council in March 2026.
