Unlocking Land To Build Homes Victorians Need

VIC Premier

The Allan Labor Government is unlocking more land for hundreds of new homes in well-located suburbs along train lines and close to jobs, schools and services.

Minister for Development Victoria and Precincts Harriet Shing announced today that two sites in Brighton, one in Camberwell and one in Preston will be added to the landmark Small Sites Program, alongside six announced earlier this year in Croydon South, Carlton, Heidelberg West, Baxter, Bendigo and Geelong.

The four new sites are:

  • 29 Lindsay Street, Brighton
  • 1 Marion Street, Brighton
  • 28A and 30A Jessie Street, Preston
  • 714 Burke Road, Camberwell.

The Expression of Interest process opens tomorrow for developers with experience delivering medium density housing to put forward proposals across the 10 sites.

The four new sites are ideal for new townhouses and apartments and could deliver around 700 new homes for Victorian families, with at least 10 per cent affordable housing across the sites.

This work builds on the earlier release of the Labor Government's Small Sites Program, which included four pilot sites in Alphington, Malvern, Preston and Coburg. There are now 14 parcels of land in the pipeline of the program, with the potential to deliver up to 1,000 new homes across Victoria.

North Brighton, Middle Brighton, Preston and Camberwell are already well-served by public transport - making them great places for new homes. These areas all form part of the Government's Train and Tram Zone Activity Centre Program.

By 2051, train and tram zones will help deliver more than 300,000 new homes - with consultation for all 50 new centres expected to be completed by early next year.

As stated by Development Victoria and Precincts Harriet Shing

"We're unlocking more land to deliver more homes for Victorian families in established suburbs."

"Every Victorian deserves a roof over their head and a place to call home, and this program opens up more opportunity for homes that are close to jobs, schools, services and the outdoor spaces that families love."
