The Security Council will today fill a vacancy on the International Court of Justice following the resignation of Judge Abdulqawi Ahmed Yusuf of Somalia, effective 30 September 2025.
By unanimously adopting resolution 2784 (2025) on 2 July, the Council decided - in accordance with Article 14 of the Statute of the Court - that the election to fill the vacancy will take place on 12 November 2025 during concurrent meetings of the Security Council and the General Assembly at its eightieth session.
Under Article 14, such vacancies are filled in the same manner as for initial elections: the Secretary-General issues the necessary invitations within one month of the vacancy's occurrence, and the Security Council fixes the election date.
