A Police Investigation Centre has been established at Weipa Police Station as detectives and specialised police continue to investigate the death of a 20-year-old local man earlier today, Queensland Police say.
Preliminary investigations indicate at around 3am the man was struck by a vehicle on Northern Avenue, near the intersection with Annandi Avenue. The man sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene.
Police are appealing for witnesses and for anyone who travelled along Northern Avenue between midnight and 3am to contact them.
Officers are also appealing for anyone driving in the Weipa township between these hours and who has dash cam video to contact them.
Investigations by the Forensic Crash Unit, Scenes of Crime and detectives continue with members of the local community asked to contact police if they notice any new or fresh damage to any vehicles or trailers in the Weipa area.
