The Byron Bay Drainage Upgrade is progressing, even after recent flash flooding in the town centre in mid-March.

"This is exactly the type of flooding that the Byron Bay Drainage Upgrade is trying to minimise once all of the work is done and the drainage system is fully connected. Forty (40) culverts have now been installed from the rail corridor into Jonson Street, seeing a solid increase in drainage capacity," said Christopher Soulsby, Council's Manager of Assets and Major Projects.

"Over the last month contractors have also decommissioned the Rotary clocktower which will be reconstructed later this year. And watermain relocation has now been completed," said Mr Soulsby.

"Contractors will now take a short break over the Easter long weekend, and will be back on site on Tuesday," he added.

The South Lawson Street Car Park will be re-opened and pedestrian access in front of the laneway between Guzman Y Gomez and Byron Hot Bread Kitchen will be reinstated tomorrow ahead of the Easter long weekend.

During April, the construction area will extend further south on Jonson Street to upgrade drainage in this section and the footpath on the eastern side of Jonson Street.

"We hope everyone has a great Easter long weekend, and people hop down to the Byron Bay town centre businesses for great food, entertainment and shopping," said Mr Soulsby.

More information about the Byron Bay Drainage Upgrade is on Council's website.
