Update On Fail-to-stop Crash At Nelson Bay

A man's licence has been suspended as an investigation continues into an alleged fail-to-stop crash at Nelson Bay on Tuesday morning.

Just before 9am (13 January 2026), a 71-year-old man was walking his dog on Stockton Street, near the roundabout at Church Street, when he attempted to cross the road.

He paused briefly at the pedestrian traffic island in the middle of the road, before continuing to cross the road.

A vehicle entered the roundabout and allegedly clipped the man before striking the man's dog – eight-year-old Lulu – killing her instantly.

When the driver allegedly failed to stop, police attached to Port Stephens-Hunter Police District were notified and commenced inquiries into the incident.

Last night (Wednesday 14 January 2026), an off-duty officer on his way to work observed the vehicle at a mechanic in Anna Bay.

The vehicle was subsequently seized after police identified damage allegedly consistent with the incident.

About 12.15pm today (Thursday 15 January 2026), officers attended a home in Anna Bay where they spoke with a 65-year-old man.

The man's driver licence was suspended, and traffic enforcement action will be taken.
