Update – Serious assault at Maroochydore, QLD

A man has been charged following investigations into the alleged serious assault of an off-duty police officer at Maroochydore this morning, Queensland Police say.

Around 5am, it will be alleged the 28-year-old man was riding a moped on Kingsford Smith Parade when he was involved in a traffic crash.

The off-duty male police officer attempted to prevent the moped rider from leaving the scene when it will be alleged he punched the officer a number of times causing him to lose consciousness.

The man is also alleged to have punched a woman who came to aid the police officer.

The 28-year-old Caloundra man was charged at a bedside hearing with one count each of serious assault police, assault occasioning bodily harm and unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

He was remanded in custody to appear in the Maroochydore Magistrates Court on June 22.
