Update: support vessel nearing fire damaged MPV Everest 12 April 2021

Australian Antarctic Division

A support vessel is on its way to meet Australia's chartered Antarctic resupply vessel, MPV Everest, after a fire on board damaged the port engine last Monday.

The large offshore tug, GO Spica, departed the Port of Fremantle last night and is now under 70 nautical miles from the Everest and heading south.

While the Everest is continuing north under its own power, GO Spica was deployed as a precautionary measure taken by the ship's owner, Maritime Construction Services.

All 109 expeditioners and crew on the vessel are safe and making preparations for their arrival into Fremantle.

The ships are due to berth late on Tuesday afternoon.
