Upgrade delivers smoother run along vital Hobart transit route

Michael Ferguson, Minister for Infrastructure and Transport

The Rockliff Liberal Government is getting things done by delivering the renewal of one of Hobart's most important transport links, which is now complete, with the rebuilding of the challenging section of Davey Street between Molle and Antill streets.

Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Michael Ferguson said the project, which was completed several weeks ahead of schedule, involved strengthening of structural weaknesses and restoring the road's condition to improve ride quality and safety.

"It required a complex engineering solution due to the need to accommodate underground services while reshaping the road to make it more level," Minister Ferguson said.

"The return of this section to normal traffic marks the completion of a comprehensive repair, resurfacing and rehabilitation program along the entire length of Davey Street.

"Rebuilding and resurfacing the sections between Murray and Molle streets and between Antill Street and the Southern Outlet were started in 2021 and completed in 2022.

"Resurfacing of the section north of Murray Street was completed in 2020.

"The Tasmanian Liberal Government committed to improving the condition and safety of this vital transport link after taking over management of the Davey Street-Macquarie Street couplet in 2019.

"Detailed investigations found significant defects, including rutting and uneven pedestrian crossings.

"The upgrade will ensure a smooth run for commuters, bus passengers and freight operators who depend on the couplet for north-south journeys through the city.

"This project also supports the delivery of projects within the Hobart City Deal."
