The upgrade of the intersection of Lismore Road and Rifle Range Road at Bangalow has been delayed.
The project was to start in April 2022, but the floods, and a review of the budget have resulted in the project being put on hold.
Phil Holloway, Director Infrastructure Services, said Council knows how important this project is to the community.
"This intersection upgrade is a significant project, but costs have increased significantly in the last 12 months," Mr Holloway said.
"Because this project is funded by grants we need to report this back to the Council and the NSW and Australian Governments," Mr Holloway said.
"This is no doubt disappointing to the community which has lobbied for a long time for safety improvements to this intersection.
"We are committed to improving the intersection of Lismore Road and Rifle Range Road and we are asking the community for its understanding as we work towards delivering this important project," he said.
The aim of the project is to improve the safety of the intersection especially for children catching school buses.
The scope for the project included:
- Widening Lismore Road to allow for a right turning lane into Rifle Range Road.
- Drainage upgrades including a new major culvert under Lismore Road to reduce flooding and improve access on Rifle Range Road
- A new bus bay and shelter for the north-bound bus on Lismore Road
- A new bus bay and shelter for the south-bound bus on Rifle Range Road
- Shared paths connecting the bus bays to Tristania Street
- Signage, safety barriers and line marking
