Upgrade works at the Bridge and Hume Streets intersection in North Toowoomba will start on Monday 29 May 2023.
Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) Infrastructure Services Committee Chair Cr Carol Taylor said the project would deliver a range of safety improvements.
"The project will receive $803,000 in funding under the Australian Government's Black Spot Program, which aims to put measures in place to reduce the risk of crashes," Cr Taylor said.
"There have been 10 crashes recorded at this site between 1 January 2015 to 30 June 2020, including one fatal crash.
"The works will include upgraded traffic signals to provide fully protected right turns, upgraded signal posts and lanterns, install LED road lighting, construct kerb extension built-out area and kerb ramps.
"To keep our community and our workers safe, a temporary road closure for three months (weather permitting) is required on Hume Street immediately north and south of the intersection, which will commence on Sunday 28 May 2023.
"Signed detours will be in place while the works are underway.
"Bridge Street will remain open in both directions and access to all properties will be maintained.
"The intersection design has been completed following consultation with nearby residents, businesses and interest groups.
"Council is committed to improving the safety of our roads for all users through better engineering and planning.
"I'm pleased to announce the start of works for the Bridge and Hume Street intersection upgrade and look forward to seeing it take shape."
Construction is expected to take approximately three months, weather permitting.
Council will seek to minimise disruptions wherever possible and thanks the community for its patience and cooperation during construction.
