Upgraded Animal Shelter Offers Better Homes

Every animal deserves comfort, care and hope while waiting for their forever home. We're proud to unveil our completely transformed Community Animal Shelter and Pound – a purpose-built sanctuary that puts animal welfare at its heart.

More than just shelter: a true home away from home

The project has been designed with animal health, happiness and quality of life at the centre:

Enhanced living spaces feature spacious dog kennels exceeding industry welfare standards, with improved natural light, under floor heating, better airflow, and sound-dampening design to reduce stress and anxiety.

Specialised care areas include a dedicated cat isolation room for treating infectious conditions, ensuring sick animals receive proper medical attention.

Expanded habitat options provide comfortable homes for pocket pets like guinea pigs and rabbits.

Community-centred adoption space creates a welcoming environment where potential families can connect with animals in a relaxed, comfortable setting – improving adoption outcomes for everyone.

The upgraded facility doesn't just benefit animals, it creates safer, more efficient workspaces for our dedicated staff and expanded training opportunities for students pursuing animal welfare careers. This investment strengthens our community's capacity to care for vulnerable animals.

Built for tomorrow

The redevelopment also demonstrates Council's commitment to environmental sustainability, incorporating:

  • 29kW rooftop solar system powering daily operations with clean energy.
  • Electric vehicle charging stations (with capacity for expansion) supporting our transition to a fully electric ranger fleet.
  • High-efficiency systems for heating, cooling, hot water, and electrical needs.
  • Rainwater harvesting to reduce reliance on potable water.
  • Recycled materials throughout construction, including reclaimed bricks, asphalt, and kennel panels.

These features ensure the shelter not only improves the lives of animals, but also reduces its environmental footprint.

Quotes attributable to Mayor and Briars Ward Councillor Anthony Marsh:

"I had the chance to see the upgraded facilities firsthand, and the care and thought that's gone into them really shows. The animals are in very good hands, and a huge credit goes to the dedicated team who work every day to make this such a positive, safe and welcoming place."
