US, Japan Ink SAMURAI Deal to Boost UAV AI Safety

The U.S. Department of War and Japanese Ministry of Defense formalized a project arrangement Sept. 22 establishing the Strategic Advancement of Mutual Runtime Assurance Artificial Intelligence (SAMURAI) initiative.

The arrangement outlines a framework for cooperative research and development focused on Runtime Assurance (RTA) technology. RTA provides a mechanism for unmanned aerial vehicles equipped with artificial intelligence to monitor their own performance and ensure continued safe operation.

Results from this cooperative effort are intended to inform future integration of AI-enabled UAVs with next-generation fighter aircraft, improving operational safety, deepening interoperability and strengthening the capabilities of the U.S.-Japan Alliance.
