Volunteer firefighters from across Western Australia will put their skills to the test this weekend at the 121st Annual State Easter Championships.

Organised by the Volunteer Fire and Rescue Services Association of WA with support from the Department of Fire and Emergency Services, the championships feature competitors battling it out across 24 events designed to replicate frontline firefighting tasks.

This year 12 brigades from Kellerberrin, Southern Cross, South Kalgoorlie, Kambalda, Albany, Brunswick Junction, Harvey, Bunbury, Mandurah, Kwinana, Oakford and Mount Magnet will compete on 4 and 5 April at Hay Park, Withers, in the City of Bunbury.

Competitors - who are all active volunteer firefighters - will utilise real-world equipment including hydrants, hoses, ladders and fire trucks to claim points across team and individual categories.

Harvey Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service (VFRS) will defend their title of 2025 Overall Champion Brigade, while Mount Magnet VFRS is set to make an exciting return to the competition following a 10-year hiatus.

WA's Volunteer Fire and Rescue Services is made up of 93 brigades and more than 2,300 volunteers who respond to emergencies including road crash rescues, HAZMAT incidents, structure fires and bushfires. Since 1 October 2025, VFRS members have attended more than 3,300 incidents across the State.

As stated by Emergency Services Minister Paul Papalia:

"Volunteer firefighters play a crucial role in keeping Western Australians safe, particularly in regional areas where they are the backbone of emergency response.

"The Annual State Easter Championships have a long and proud history and are a fantastic showcase of the strong talent and expertise within our Volunteer Fire and Rescue Services.

"It's great to see brigades from as far north as Mount Magnet down to Albany coming together to compete, learn from each other and showcase the values of teamwork and camaraderie, which are fundamental to emergency services.

"Volunteering in emergency services is a fantastic way to make new friends and help communities in need but it's also an opportunity to develop your confidence and gain new skills such as teamwork and problem-solving."
