Volunteer program continues to grow

Almost 4000 trees were planted and 20,000 native seedlings propagated in the past year as part of the Green Space Our Place (GSOP) volunteer program.

The program, which incorporates 12 weekly supervised groups, has 427 registered volunteers who undertake a variety of activities, including gardening, revegetation, nursery work, guided tours, general park enhancement, produce gardening, and plant information sessions.

Two significant tree planting programs were undertaken in the past year – Jabirus supported the Smithfield Bypass Group to plat about 800 trees alongside the bypass highway near Cattana Wetlands, while 1,200 trees were planted at the Kewarra Beach foreshore.

There were additional trees also planted to revegetate areas at Yellow Arrow trail head in Aeroglen, Russell Street Environmental Park in Edge Hill, Stroopers Park in Freshwater, and Southside Mountain Bike Track in Edmonton.

Stratford Nursery volunteering has been steadily growing in popularity and although the nursery was closed for renovations for three months, volunteers were able to propagate about 20,000 native seedlings.

Responding to an increased interest in food propagation, GSOP established The Green Space at Jess Mitchell Park in Greenslopes St to provide advice on growing produce and associated sustainability.
