Council is looking for local residents to join the Community Volunteer Driver program, helping older members of the community get where they need to go; whether it's the shops, social activities or medical appointments.
The program relies on volunteer drivers who live locally. Council is particularly keen to welcome new volunteers from Warrandyte, Wattle Glen, Hurstbridge, Panton Hill, and St Andrews.
The role is flexible, rewarding and a great way to meet new people while making a real difference in the community.
Volunteers can drive our Community Bus or use their own car, and be reimbursed for the kilometres travelled. Volunteers are supported by the Community Transport Officer.
Linda, a volunteer driver for almost five years said she really loves volunteering. "Not only do you meet people in your area with fantastic stories, but we also have a laugh. It helps participants, but it really helps me too, because I feel like I'm doing something meaningful," she said.
Nillumbik Mayor John Dumaresq said that with no public transport options in the rural parts of our shire, we need more drivers who live in the area.
If you enjoy driving and want to give back to your community, this is a great way to meet interesting people and make a real difference close to home," he said.
