Vote on Clarence Valley LGA Place Name

NSW Department of Customer Service

The Geographical Names Board (GNB) is seeking community feedback on a proposal by Clarence Valley Council to name a reserve in the locality of Iluka as Iluka Memorial Park.

The park is bound by the Clarence River and Charles Street and contains the Iluka Cenotaph. The reserve is known locally as Jim Crummy Park; however this name has not been officially assigned.

Jim Crummy was the president of the RSL Sub-Branch at the time the reserve was gazetted.

Since the reserve's creation the Maclean RSL Sub-Branch decided no park would be named after a specific member unless they are a Victoria Cross recipient.

The proposed name honours the contributions of all soldiers who served and is supported by the Iluka chapter of Maclean RSL Sub-Branch.

GNB is seeking feedback to gauge community sentiment for the proposed name. Suggestions for alternative names is not being sought at this time.

Details of the proposal can be viewed and submissions lodged on the Geographical Names Board's website.

Alternatively, written submissions may be mailed to the Secretary, Geographical Names Board, 346 Panorama Ave, Bathurst, NSW 2795.

The closing date for submissions is 3 May 2024.

Quotes to be attributed to NSW Surveyor-General Narelle Underwood:

"Names are not just labels; they tell the stories of their community, and it is important that they reflect the character and history of the local area."

"Community consultation on the proposed names is an important step to make sure everyone has an opportunity to provide their feedback and ensures that each voice has a chance to contribute."
