WA Climate Initiative Boosts Science Innovation

  • Cook Government showcases $7.35 million Climate Science Initiative at Murdoch University
  • Latest technology producing the most detailed climate change projections for Western Australia to date

The Cook Government will host a landmark forum at Murdoch University to highlight cutting-edge advancements in climate science, data accessibility, and communication tools developed through the Climate Science Initiative (CSI).

The forum will spotlight key achievements of the CSI - one of the key directives of the Cook Government's Climate Adaptation Strategy - and explore future directions for the program.

This event offers a unique opportunity for researchers, policymakers, planners, and community stakeholders to engage directly with the science shaping Western Australia's climate resilience efforts and gain insights into the next phase of the program.

Backed by a $7.35 million investment, the Climate Science Initiative is producing high-resolution projections of temperature, rainfall, and other climate variables to support informed decision-making across government, industry, and the community.

Led by Department of Water and Environmental Regulation (DWER) in collaboration with Murdoch University, the Pawsey Supercomputing Research Centre, and the NSW Government's NARCliM program, the initiative is enabling advanced climate simulations. Future work will focus on generating even finer-scale projections to better capture local climate processes.

To enhance accessibility, DWER is developing the WA Climate Projections Viewer - a user-friendly tool designed to translate complex climate data into actionable insights for the broader community.

The demand for localised climate information spans all sectors of society, from government and business to everyday Western Australians.

The Murdoch University event will be held on 12 November, in partnership with the Pawsey Supercomputing Research Centre.

As stated by Climate Resilience Minister Don Punch:

"Western Australia's future prosperity and way of life depend on our ability to understand and respond to climate risks.

"The Cook Government is committed to protecting our environment so that future generations can continue to enjoy the economic and lifestyle benefits it provides.

"The Climate Science Initiative is growing Western Australia's climate science capability from the ground up - bringing together local experts, research institutions and national partners to deliver the tailored data our communities need to plan for a resilient future.

"By investing in high-resolution climate modelling and making it accessible to everyone - from planners to households - we're ensuring Western Australians have the tools to prepare for the challenges ahead and make smarter, climate-resilient decisions."
