WA Govt Unveils Major Upgrades for Country Tennis

  • Ten tennis courts upgraded at Katanning Country Club
  • Project delivered with support from the Cook Government
  • PlayOn WA initiative strengthening community sport and recreation facilities

Tennis players in the Central Great Southern region are now able to play year-round after the completion of major upgrades to the courts at Katanning Country Club.

Through a $132,271 investment from the Western Australian Government, new synthetic grass has been installed across the club's 10 courts which had become unusable in parts after two decades of use.

The upgrades have also addressed water damage and improved surface drainage, so players have access to a safer, weather-resilient playing surface that can be used all year.

As a major sporting hub for the region, the upgraded facilities will help boost participation, attract visiting players, support community events, and strengthen Katanning as a key sporting destination for the region.

The new courts will provide opportunities for schools, clubs, and community groups to participate in tennis programs and events, helping to foster local talent, encourage healthy lifestyles, and strengthen connections within the Central Great Southern region.

The upgrades were delivered through the Cook Government's PlayOn WA: 2030 by 2030 initiative which is delivering quality local sports infrastructure across the State to support healthier, more connected communities.

As stated by Sport and Recreation Minister Rita Saffioti:

"The Katanning Country Club is a thriving sports hub for the Central Great Southern, and these upgrades will ensure it can continue to serve local players, visiting teams, and the next generation of country athletes for many years to come.

"This investment has delivered a fantastic outcome for the Katanning community and will help to grow participation across the region.

"Projects like these are what the PlayOn WA initiative is all about - giving communities access to quality facilities that support active lifestyles and bring people together through local sport."

As stated by Great Southern Minister Reece Whitby:

"It's fantastic to see this level of support for the Katanning Country Club as these upgrades will ensure it can continue to attract events, members and visitors for years to come.

"The Katanning Country Club is a major hub for our local community, and this investment shows our commitment to supporting facilities in the Great Southern."
