  • Winners announced atthe Town Team Movement's Festival of Doing
  • Annual awards showcase innovative projects that improve the lives of residents and public spaces

Projects that have transformed local communities have been recognised at the third annual Local Government Minister's Place Innovation Awards.

The awards, administered by the Town Team Movement with support from the Department of Local Government, Industry Regulation and Safety, recognise and promote innovative place-related projects, policies and activities.

The Town Teams Movement is a non-profit organisation that enables communities and local governments to connect, organise, and act to revitalise their neighbourhoods to create better places.

Applications from 15 local governments were received, with the following three awarded winners:

  • Outstanding Achievement - Shire of Christmas Island for the Christmas Island Fisheries Management;
  • Metropolitan and Peel - City of Kalamunda for the Wattle Grove Community Dog Park; and
  • Regional - Shire of Gnowangerup for Partnering Together: The Stirling Range Cultural and Tourism Precinct.

The Shire of Christmas Island's approach to fisheries management works collaboratively across government, industry, and community to achieve improved results. The project has invested in its local community to overcome complex issues and create sustainable change.

The City of Kalamunda's Wattle Grove Community Dog Park is purpose-built, cost-effective, and importantly, has created a sense of ownership within the local community. The engagement and delivery model can be easily replicated by other local governments.

The Shire of Gnowangerup's Partnering Together: The Stirling Range Cultural and Tourism Precinct demonstrates how a local government can achieve new standards in achieving genuine trust, community relationships, and shared decision-making to plan and redevelop a cultural and tourism precinct.

The winners were announced on Friday, 8 May at the Town Team Movement's Festival of Doing.

As stated by Local Government Minister Hannah Beazley:

"The awards, now in their third year, demonstrate there is a lot of amazing work occurring in our local communities to improve public spaces and add value to our lives.

"These initiatives are about developing more inclusive communities and creating a sense of belonging.

"On behalf of the Cook Labor Government, I'd like to congratulate the winners and all the local governments that nominated."
