- McGowan Government committed to boosting the number of Western Australians nominated for Australian honours and awards
- Campaign to increase nominations begins today
The McGowan Government is urging Western Australians to say thanks to someone deserving of national recognition by nominating them for an Australian honour or award.
With nominations from WA significantly lower compared to other States, the State Government will today launch a campaign to increase the number of homegrown nominees.
The Australian honours system, managed by the Commonwealth Government, recognises outstanding achievements and the commitment of extraordinary Australians across professional, public and community service areas.
Of the 778 Australians recently awarded the Order of Australia, only 55 Western Australians were recognised - about seven per cent of the total number of recipients.
The campaign will encourage more people to nominate worthy recipients, particularly those that serve their community at a grassroots level.
As stated by Premier Mark McGowan:
"There are hundreds of extraordinary Western Australians who give selflessly to our community, but when was the last time we said 'thank you?'
"The number of homegrown nominees and recipients of Australian honours and awards is well below that of other States or Territories so today we have launched a campaign to have more Western Australians recognised in our national awards.
"While the Commonwealth manages these awards, it's important that we throw our hats into the ring. We know that when we do, we have a high success rate.
"I am particularly keen to see more women and indigenous Western Australians recognised through these important awards.
"I encourage everyone to put forward the names of people in the community that have made a difference, especially those quiet achievers who give without thought of recognition or personal gain.
"Don't let our role models go unnoticed. Step up and shine the spotlight on someone, young or old, from across our multicultural and diverse State.
"Anyone can be nominated so spread the word and join with me in making sure our exceptional citizens are celebrated. We owe it to our local heroes to say thanks."
