Wanted man arrested after foot pursuit; charged with assault of police at Wagga Wagga

A man will face court today charged with numerous serious offences after he allegedly assaulted a police officer in an attempt to avoid apprehension in the state's Riverina region.

Just after 2pm yesterday (Tuesday 11 January 2022), officers from Riverina Police District were patrolling the Kooringal area when they saw a man – wanted on an outstanding warrant – driving a vehicle and attempted to pull it over on Menzies Avenue.

When the vehicle stopped, the 27-year-old man got out and ran from the car with police giving chase on foot.

It will be alleged in court that the man swung his backpack at the male constable, hitting him in the face, before striking out at him to avoid arrest.

A struggle ensued and further officers arrived on scene to affect the arrest.

The constable was taken to Wagga Wagga Health Service for treatment and has since been released.

During a subsequent search of the man and his backpack, police located and seized a shortened single barrel shotgun, a handgun, ammunition, an electronic stun device, and a variety of prohibited and prescription drugs.

He was taken to Wagga Wagga Police Station, where he was charged with assault police officer in execution of duty cause actual bodily harm, resist officer in execution of duty, possess shortened firearm (not pistol) without authority, possess unauthorised firearm, two counts of not keep firearm safely-not pistol/prohibited firearm, possess ammunition without holding licence/permit/authority, possess or use a prohibited weapon without permit, two counts of possess prohibited drug, possess/attempt to, and prescribed restricted substance.

Further, the outstanding warrant was executed, and he was charged with drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous, use unregistered registrable Class A motor vehicle on road, drive unlicensed, and stalk/intimidate intend fear physical etc harm (domestic).

The Kooringal man has been refused bail to appear at Wagga Wagga Local Court today (Wednesday 12 January 2022).
