Wanted man charged after pursuit as part of investigations into Darlinghurst assault

A wanted man has been charged following a police pursuit in Sydney's south west as part of investigations into an alleged assault in Darlinghurst at the weekend.

Just after 10.30pm on Sunday (12 July 2020), a Volkswagen Passat was stopped at the intersection of Nimrod and Caldwell streets, Darlinghurst, when the driver, a 33-year-old man, exited the vehicle and allegedly assaulted one of the occupants, a 14-year-old girl.

Police have been told a passer-by attempted to intervene, tackling the driver into a nearby fence before he was also assaulted.

The driver returned to the vehicle and drove off with the girl and a woman in the Volkswagen, reportedly stolen from a Morisset home on Saturday 4 July 2020.

Officers attached to Kings Cross Police Area Command attended and commenced an investigation.

Following inquiries and a public appeal, police recovered the stolen Volkswagen outside a home on Morison Drive, Lurnea, about 6pm yesterday (Wednesday 15 July 2020).

About 10pm the same day, officers from Campbelltown Police Area Command were patrolling the Bradbury area after receiving information and attempted to stop a Lexus SC430 – reportedly stolen from a Kilaben Bay home on Wednesday 8 July - on Appin Road.

When the Lexus failed to stop, a pursuit was initiated and travelled through nearby Rosemeadow before being terminated shortly after due to safety concerns.

With assistance from PolAir and the Dog Unit, the Lexus was monitored until it stopped on Lisa Close, Narellan, and the two occupants fled on foot.

Officers from Camden Police Area Command arrested a 33-year-old man and a 14-year-old girl – who was not suffering any serious injuries – nearby on Scott Street.

During a search of the man, police allegedly found methylamphetamine and steroids.

The man and girl were both taken to Narellan Police Station. She was later released, pending further investigation.

The man was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm (DV), two counts of drive conveyance taken without consent of owner, two counts of drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous, Police pursuit - not stop - drive recklessly, two counts of three counts of possess prohibited drug, and common assault.

An outstanding warrant for drug supply offences was also executed, resulting in the man being charged with supply prohibited drug - indictable, take part supply prohibited drug - commercial quantity, supply prohibited drug, supply prohibited drugs on an ongoing basis, and procure minor to supply drug.

He has been refused bail to appear at Campbelltown Local Court today (Thursday 16 July 2020).

Police have completed a child at risk notification to Family and Community Services.
