Water main works underway for suburban water security

A new water main pipe at Aitkenvale will help increase water security in Townsville suburbs following works starting this month.

The water main replacement will be on Ross River Road between Anne St and Charlotte St and will take about nine weeks to complete, weather and project conditions permitting.

Infrastructure Services Committee chairperson Kurt Rehbein said the works would be broken into two phases.

"This project will deliver an essential underground water main pipeline to secure water connection between the suburban catchment zones of Aitkenvale and Mundingburra," Cr Rehbein said.

"Works will include the installation of a new water main pipe under the footpath on Ross River Road between Charlotte St and Anne St, with some of the works being conducted between 6pm and 6am to reduce the impact on businesses and commuters.

"These works may include machinery noises, the closure of the footpath and safety fencing in place. Thank you to residents, business owners and commuters for your patience as our crews complete this important work."

Water and Waste Committee chairperson Russ Cook said Council was committed to providing clean and safe drinking water to Townsville residents.

"By undertaking these works Council is able to continue safely delivering water to Mundingburra and Aitkenvale," Cr Cook said.

"As our population continues to grow it's essential that we update our assets to ensure we're able to cater for increasing water demand.

"Council is investing more than $200 million into critical water infrastructure projects across the city this financial year as part of our focus on water security for our growing city."

The Ross River Road water pipeline renewal project is expected to run until early May, weather and project conditions permitting.
