Water security remains a priority

A report to Council today detailed the progress of the Cairns Water Security Strategy (CWSS), outlining measures to safeguard the city's future water requirements.

Over the past three years, several projects have been completed, including:

  • Levels of Service review (completed December 2019)
  • Leak detection program completed (water savings of 398ML/a)
  • Education van launched in March 2018
  • Hydraulic study on the Mulgrave River completed in September 2017
  • DNRM approval for the temporary take of water from the Mulgrave River for the pilot plant has been obtained

Council is also progressing with a number of water security projects, including the installation of smart water meters, investigation of options for the intake on the Mulgrave River, pilot plant water quality testing and Emergency Water Supply options and designs.

Initiatives outlined in the report align with Council's recognition that water is our most valuable resource and securing adequate water supplies to meet growing demand remains a priority.
