Introducing the Waverley Wonders - a crew of Launnie's little legends, making big changes to how people care and think about where they live, work and play.

As part of the City of Launceston's Launnie Connecting Community program, students of Waverley Primary School were invited to join the Waverley Wonders group, tasked with a range of community initiatives, including the creation of a student-led film celebrating what makes Waverley home.

Working alongside film production company Action Crew, students and community members were brought together to capture the stories, connections, and future hopes of the suburb.

Filmed over two days in November within pop-up studios at both Waverley Primary School and Waverley Woollen Mills, students were mentored through the process of script development, creative direction and interview techniques as they produced their very first community film.

Now, this love letter to Waverley is set to be unveiled to students and teachers at Waverley Primary School's end of year assembly - with special guest, City of Launceston Mayor Matthew Garwood joining students for the celebration.

"There's nothing better than hearing from the Launnie community about what makes our city special and it's even better seeing the pride our young people have in the place we call home," Mayor Garwood said.

"Watching this film genuinely made me proud, hearing students and the community members talk about what they love most about Waverley is pretty special."

"This is something more than worth watching and worth celebrating. The next generation of Launnie creatives have absolutely nailed it."

The Launnie Connecting Community program is designed to work alongside local leaders within a chosen suburb with the goal of driving positive change within their neighbourhood.

City of Launceston Community Connector Sarah McCormack has been working with the Waverley community as part of this two-year program to identify community strengths, knowledge and experiences, supporting the development of grassroots projects and initiatives for the suburb.

"Waverley is the seventh suburb that this program has taken place in since 2016 and I absolutely love to see how each community celebrates the place they call home," McCormack said.

"Over the past 12 months we've been able to listen, connect and help the community of Waverley bring their ideas to life, and we've had such a great time doing it.

"It's through grassroots relationships that we've been able to deliver so many great projects that matter the most to Waverley - just like the Gumboot Gala, the Knitted Sock Project - where 254 socks were hand knitted by community for students at Waverley Primary, the 'Tiny Forest' initiative to create a living classroom for students, and so much more.

"These are the kinds of programs that make long lasting impact and change for our community, and I'm really proud to be able to play a part in that."
